Dawson Creek to Watson Lake

Image
6/26/17 We left Dawson Creek at 8:10 a.m. (even I am impressed at our early departure).  A long driving day from Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson - about 283 miles.  It was a beautiful green drive through the thickly forested land. The Alaska Highway is literally carved out of the wilderness.  There were lots of oil and gas encampments of men and equipment, as well as lots of lumber trucks.  Road through the wilderness Fields of canola (which is bright yellow) bloom along the highway (this is what is made into canola oil).   Canola fields At about 148 miles out of Dawson Creek, we saw the area that was once called 'Suicide Hill'.  It had a sign at the entrance which said, "Prepare to meet thy maker."   Here is a picture of the original road.    Suicide Hill The road has been improved and moved since then, so there is no more 'suicide hill'.  Just saw a pair of red foxes running across the road, and I was too slow to get a picture of it.

Clairmont, Alberta to Dawson Creek

6/22/17 Cleaned the coach and then went for a walk up to the front office.  Visited with a nice lady there who loved to talk to me about Clairmont and next leg of our trip to Dawson Creek.  She showed me a live (behind glass) bee hive, full of honey bees, inside the office/store.  They come in through a pvc pipe outside and into the hive inside.  She explained that the owner loved his bees and had many beehives in the back.  This small display case was for his enjoyment.  She told me all about the difference jobs each different type of bee had, including the mortician bee, who cleaned up the dead ones at dusk every night.  Very interesting.  I bought home made ice cream on a cone and talked with her a little while, than walked back to the coach.  Tom was outside repairing the car cover which got ripped off in the heavy winds we came through yesterday.  He got his Gorilla Tape out, and taped it all up - good as new! 6/23/17 We made our way to Dawson Creek - only about 1

6/17/17 Left Great Falls, MT and headed north.  Crossed the Canadian border with no problems (they didn't even take my produce away).  Arrived in Granum, Alberta (AB) Canada.  The campground had a large pond, and the dogs were in it immediately.  Lots of trees and grass.  Granum, Alberta at 9:30 p.m. We are far enough north to begin to see the long days.  This picture of the trees in front of our campsite was taken at 9:30 p.m.  The sun sets at around 9:45 p.m. here.  We are only here for one night, so no touring or no news. 6/18/17 Sunday - Happy Father's Day to all you fathers out there.  My dad celebrated at my sister's house with family, and I heard dinner was great. Today our route is Granum AB to Edmonton, AB.  We are headed north and passing through the outskirts of Calgary, AB.  Here is a picture from my window. Downtown Calgary Continuing north to Acheson, a suburb of Edmonton, AB.  Edmonton is the northernmost l

06/09/2017 Well, I told you that we were leaving home on  6/8/17, but things didn't go just as planned.  We packed everything except the cold food, and at 10:00 pm on 6/7/17, I noticed that the refrigerator had not gotten cold, even though it had been on all day.  Tom checked it out and found that the pipe from the propane tank to the refrigerator and stove had been hit by the flying debris from the broken drive shaft and we were leaking propane.  We couldn't go anywhere.  The next morning, we were so fortunate to have our favorite mechanic at the RV dealer across the freeway from us come in on his day off and work only on our coach.  He had to replace the broken pipe and he checked all other electrical and plumbing connections underneath the coach.  We got the motorhome out of the shop at 6:00 pm.   We called it a night. Leaving Home 06/09/17 We left on our trip on 6/9/17 after loading all the food, and all seemed just fine.  The picture above is of Tom

Leaving Home

The Harris Adventurers<br> We are off on our second 'bucket list' roadtrip since retirement.  This time we wanted to take a roadtrip through the Canadian Yukon and Alaska.  I was a bit nervous about driving this trip alone, so we are joining a tour group, Fantasy RV Tours, for a little added safety and some social engagement with fellow RVers.  The tour starts in Dawson Creek, BC on 6/24/17 and winds through Canada, Alaska, and back south through Canada to Smithers, BC on 8/10/17, lasting 48 days.  In addition, we will  be traveling about 2100 miles from home to Dawson Creed, BC to begin the tour, and about 2100 miles from Smithers, BC to home.  So here we go..... Today we leave Palm Desert to Las Vegas for our first night.  Our friends, Andy and Dyanna Marton, live in Las Vegas and we haven't seen them for a long time.  Dyanna and I worked together at the bank around 1968-1971, and were pregnant at the same time.  I was carrying Kim, and she was carrying
